Reunification Project
When examining the data on children and young people entering the out of home care system (foster care and residential care) it highlighted that a great number of young people needing alternate care had been in the system previously. On average just over 4 out of 10 in 2008 in the Southern Metropolitan Region.
GordonCare has been exploring this area of work as an opportunity to increase the number of children and young people remaining with their families safely once they have returned home from residential care or foster care. We have assembled a distinguished reference group including central and regional Department of Human Services representatives, Office of Victorian Child Safety Commissioner, Centre of Excellence for Child and Family Welfare, Social Work academics and key GordonCare staff to guide the study. Associate Professor Annette Jackson is the project leader.
A detailed literature review has been produced and key stakeholders and practitioners interviewed to date. We aim to make the findings available broadly to the field as we believe improvement in stability of reunifications is a key concern within the child protection system. Upon conclusion, the study will also help GordonCare determine how we can best assist in this work. We already contribute to family reunification through our residential care and Access program and would like to extend this vital work.
